OpenMedia’s Communications Manager plays a key strategic and supportive role in our organization, managing how we tell our story, with an emphasis on broad public engagement and proactive communication with the press.
Key responsibilities include:
Managing our Communications and Community Engagement Team.
Leading our media relations, including brand storytelling, news/issue monitoring, writing press releases, and conducting targeted proactive media outreach.
Acting as a spokesperson across all mediums and all areas of our work, fielding all incoming media requests, performing interviews and assigning media work to other team members as-needed.
Content production and editorial oversight of OpenMedia.org and copyediting public-facing communications.
Strategic communications, developing resources including segmented press lists, and developing and updating talking points.
This demanding leadership position is right for a self-starter who is eager to act as a spokesperson across all areas of OpenMedia’s work, crafting an engaging narrative for media, public stakeholders, and members of our wider community. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Manager will work closely with the management team on organizational strategy and team integration. This role is key to ensuring that OpenMedia’s web properties are up to date and accessible to the public with an eye towards quality control, and will lead on telling our organizational story with all public-facing communications.

You can quickly pump out anything from a clever tweet, to an informative blog to a hard-hitting press release, all speaking to the issue at hand and grabbing the attention of the media and our community.
You know how to prioritize strategically. This is a fast-paced environment. You have a fine-tuned sense of when it’s worth it to “drop everything,” and are okay with the fact that, some days, an early morning development means you won’t get through a single item you put on your to-do list that day.
You know how to get the most out of your team. At OpenMedia, we are passionate about showing what people can do when they work together. That starts with our staff, and ensuring that everyone knows how they fit and has a place to contribute.
You are “so over” partisan bickering. We don’t just want a seat at the table when government makes decisions; we actively work to put citizens at the centre of government decision-making.

As OpenMedia’s Communications Manager, you must have:
Experience successfully managing and leading a high-performing team, and mentoring and developing key staff.
Experience working in communications and as a media spokesperson — appearing on TV, radio and in print.
Expertise in crafting messaging for various media formats (including emails, ad copy, social media, press releases, etc).
Experience writing for different platforms, audiences, and mediums.
Strong planning, organizing, and problem solving skills.
A commitment to a collaborative and inclusive approach to decision making that focuses on enabling the team to achieve mastery, autonomy and purpose over their own work.
Ability to work remotely with team members around the world.
A strong commitment to an Internet that is open, affordable, and surveillance-free.
Quick learner, able to grasp new tools, trends, and technologies quickly and thoroughly;

Speaking to and meeting with politicians and key decision makers
Teaching your colleagues what you know to help reach our goals faster

Brainstorming with a collaborative team
With user-centric / UX design concepts and frameworks
Using web content management systems – particularly Drupal – and have a basic knowledge of HTML
Although our head office is based in Vancouver, Canada, we can consider remote working opportunities in Toronto, Montreal, or Ottawa for the right candidate.

This is a permanent position with a six-month probation period. Salary is commensurate with experience, but we are able to hire in the range of $50-55K per annum. We offer a comprehensive, competitive, extended health benefits package.
